About Us
The Heart and Stroke Foundation Mission
The Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteer-based health charity, leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living, and advocacy.
Every day, heart disease and stroke affects individuals, families, friends, and entire communities all across the province of New Brunswick. Since 1952, Canada's mortality rate from heart disease and stroke has decreased by 70 per cent which is a remarkable achievement made possible in large part by the efforts of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Although the mortality rate has decreased significantly, heart disease and strokes account for one of every three deaths in Canada. This is going to be a huge problem in the near future because of the aging population, increasingly pervasive levels of heart disease and stroke, and unprecedented rates of obesity and physical inactivity.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation funds more than 900 research facilities across the country. These research facilities are located in places such as hospitals, universities, and medical institutes. These research facilities have discovered things such as simple aspirin preventing heart attacks, discovering new technologies that detect strokes, and the treatment of babies with congenital heart defects.
To fund all of the research the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick relies solely on the generosity of New Brunswick citizens. This money goes directly to funding research in order to find new technologies and cures for heart disease and stroke. By working with New Brunswickers to confront challenges that lie ahead, we will continue to lead the way in the fight against heart disease and stroke.
